Katherine Johnson

This vibrant mixed media collage celebrates Katherine Johnson, who was the first African American female mathematician to calculate orbits for NASA. Her precise work in orbital mechanics shaped the success of Project Mercury, Apollo 11, and other historic missions. She was portrayed in the film Hidden Figures, which brought long-overdue recognition to her and her fellow Black female mathematicians at NASA.

The collage features imagery of rocket launches, handwritten equations, the Apollo lunar mission profile, and her receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Barack Obama. It captures Johnson’s legacy as a pioneer in aerospace, mathematics, and civil rights—a brilliant mind that helped launch humanity into space and a courageous voice that helped open doors for future generations.
